Neither Wicked nor a Witch

Neither Wicked nor a Witch. A German woman who suffered a terrifying death has finally been acquitted of practising black magic – unfortunately the decision is around 400 years too late for Katharina Henot!

Neither Wicked nor a Witch

Katharina was a remarkable woman who was probably the first female postmistress of Cologne a very prestigious appointment at the time. Indeed her high flying career could have been the catalyst which lead to her horrifying demise, as it is thought that, as the head of the city’s post office and a powerful socialite, she may have been the victim of politically-motivated feud.

Katharina was arrested in January 1627 after a local nun claimed that she was a witch and had caused the deaths of several people in the region. Having been accused of witchcraft the defendant stood little chance of being found innocent. As part of the legal process Katharina was severely tortured before her death to such an extent that although she was normally right-handed she  had to sign her final denial of witchcraft charges brought against her with her left hand.

Despite her spirited defence the charges she faced  and her brother’s desperate attempts to secure her release, she was eventually found guilty. After the verdict the poor woman was  paraded through the streets in a wagon and then burned at the stake. Unlike other countries where heretics were more likely to be burned than ‘witches’ Germany embraced witch trials and it is thought that about 25,000 Germans lost their lives during the country’s obsession with the subject. Many of those killed for their supposed crimes seem to have been forgotten by history and so their reputations  have never been cleared, meaning they are still guilty in the eyes of the law.

Heroic Priest Harmut Hegeler

Recently, Katharina found an champion in the shape of a priest called Hartmut Hegeler. Hegeler wanted to clear her name as part of an awareness campaign about the continuing persecution of women across the world. Katharina’s case was reopened by Cologne City Council (the same authority that sentenced her four centuries ago). Officials found that she had been convicted on trumped-up charges of sorcery and exonerated her.

Maha Shivaratri 2012

Maha Shivaratri which is translated as ‘The Night of Lord Shiva’, falls on the fourteenth day of the waning moon in the Tamil month of Masi, when the Sun is in the sign of what in the West would be known as Aquarius, as a result this year Maha Shivaratri falls on 20th February.

Maha Shivaratri 2012

Shiva who is also known as Bholenath or Nataraja is a major Hindu God, and performs the role of a destroyer or transformer God among the Hindu Trinity of the primary aspects of the divine. It is important to realise that the destructive aspect of Shiva is not ‘bad’ rather it opens the way for creation.

Shiva

Shiva is portrayed as a wise yogi who notices everything that happens in the world. In the Shaiva tradition of Hinduism, he is seen as the Supreme God and has five important roles: creating, preserving, destroying, concealing, and revealing, whereas in the Smarta tradition, he is regarded as one of the 5 primary forms of God. In art he is shown as a handsome young man either meditating or dancing on the demon of ignorance. His eternal youth is due to his power over death, rebirth and immortality.

Maha Shivaratri starts with a night vigil leading up to the day of the festival, during which many Shiva devotees fast and offer special prayers. Flowers, incense and other offerings are made, while prayers and bhajans are chanted. One of the most famous prayers recited to lord Shiva on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri is the Mahanrityunjaya Mantra or the death conquering mantra:

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat

We meditate on the Three-eyed reality which permeates and nourishes all like a fragrance. May we be liberated from death for the sake of immortality, even as a cucumber is severed from bondage to the creeper.

Whitney Houston’s Revelation

Unless you’ve been on holiday to Mars you can’t have failed to have heard that the singer Whitney Houston, 48,  was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton hotel last Saturday.

Whitney Houston’s Revelation

Her passing was a shock to friends and family everywhere but maybe they should have not have been stunned as it has been claimed that she had a premonition about her death.

According to TMZ.com the singer became spiritual in her final days and told friends she “really wanted to see Jesus”. The website claims Whitney began quoting the bible and singing religious songs, in the days leading up to her death.  She performed Yes Jesus Loves Me at the Tru nightclub in Hollywood on Friday night and the website claims the singer told a friend: “I’m gonna go see Jesus… I want to see Jesus.”

Houston’s premonition

This does not seem to be an isolated incident, several of Whitney’s friends have told TMZ.com that Whitney announced to them that “she really wanted to see Jesus,”. Furthermore, only a few days before she past away she told pals that she had a feeling that hear the end was imminent.

Houston and Jesus

Another friend has claimed that Whitney had spent a lot of time recently praising Jesus, because she knew her time was coming and just hours before she died it has been claimed Whitney was quoting bible passages from the Gospel of Matthew.

When you add all this together you can’t help but think Whitney really may have had a premonition that she would not be in this world much longer. Her funeral is expected to be made available for television and web streaming from the New Jersey church which she attended as a youngster.

Already it has been confirmed nearly a dozen celebrities will be in some of the 1,500 “invitation-only” seats. Aretha Franklin, Houston’s godmother, has been asked to sing at the funeral, which begins at noon. Others confirmed mourners are; Chaka Khan, Bebe & CeCe Winans, songwriter Diane Warren, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, pop singer Darlene Love, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Ray J and Brandy and singer Dionne Warwick who was Whitney‘s cousin.

With the debate raging about science and secular against God and spirituality, this is an interesting development.

Tarot Card of the day 8th February 2012

Tarot Card of the day 8th February 2012. Today I have drawn The Fool. This Major Arcana Card can be both positive and also less so, but what does it really mean?

Tarot Card of the day 8th February 2012

The Fool has no number in the Major Arcana, seen as the first card of the pack or the 0. If you draw this in a reading, these are the three outcomes on a Past, Present and Future basis.

The Fool

The Fool Past:

Perhaps you have not been listening to advice as closely as you should. Have you been rushing in where angels fear to tread? It maybe you have been plunging into things too soon. In relationships it appears you may have been in love with love. That is in the past, and now you have learnt to look before you leap. Or, you may have been over cautious and unwilling to allow yourself to be carried in the stream of life, preferring to fight against the tide, if so you’ve been wasting your energy, and you need to go with the flow.

The Fool Present:

Life is full of surprises at the moment. This could be the time to let go of your worries and self doubts; it could be worth taking a leap of faith. If you are confused about a decision The Fool suggests you take a deep breath, believe in your abilities and follow your heart. Look out for someone who is either bisexual, gay or rather eccentric, they could turn out to be an absolute gem; they certainly will make life more fun. Be prepared to go with the flow for now. But don’t avoid your responsibilities in this hedonistic haze!

The Fool Future:

There is a possibility of new beginnings and changes in the future. You may find yourself much more carefree and optimistic than usual. Keep an eye out for a bisexual, gay or eccentric person who will have some bearing on your new endeavours. In relationships a wild and exciting friend or lover becomes central in your life. In maters of romance The Fool suggests erotic eccentric energy and pleasure, but unfortunately it also suggests a lack of commitment.  Whether you’re considering a relationship or new project you need to accept new ideas. There is also the possibility of a journey.

“Psychic” and Amy Winehouse

Mitch Winehouse the father of the late Amy Winehouse, the raven haired singer whose distinctive voice won her world acclaim has criticised a “psychic” who has been pestering him with assertions that his daughter is haunting her friends.

“Psychic” and Amy Winehouse

As you’ll remember the talented songstress died July last year. And a Canadian woman; Nadine Rhodes, has told Mitch, 60, that there have been a string of “angelic appearances” by the singer in Canada.

Rhodes maintains that Amy’s ghost was begging for help for an English man who was suffering severe pain. Rhodes said that Amy kept appearing dressed in white, telling her friends that a man called Kevin Sheridan in Bedfordshire was suffering.

Rhodes also claims that Amy has been telling her friends that the British police have been using voodoo to curse suspects.

It seems Mitch is infuriated with her messages and has decided to refute Rhodes comments via Twitter. According to the British tabloid the Daily Star his tweet read;

“You know this doesn’t make any sense,”

He totally discounted the idea that the police used voodoo and he added he had never heard of Kevin Sheridan.

“Why would Amy appear to strangers?” he added.

This incident is just the latest blow for the bereaved father. This week he was informed that the coroner who held Amy’s inquest was not fully qualified and the misadventure verdict on his daughter may be invalid.
