Football Karma

No, our game is based on passion and commitment. That means that the bottom team can always beat the top teams, unlike elsewhere. But a little bit of Karma came into play yesterday, when two of those brilliant overseas players, two Argentine internationals, scored two of the goals which took Manchester City to the title.

Now, I am not a Manchester City fan, and I think Manchester United, their rivals, have played brilliant football for many years, but in recent week’s one of their players, dived, rather extravagantly to win two penalties. Without these goals, the title may not have gone down to the last day.

Now, I am not saying that Manchester City players have never connived to win decisions, but it just came up for me, Karma, that is. Manchester City’s opponents Queens Park Rangers, also survived. They had a good goal disallowed against Bolton, who were relegated – on the back of a couple of dodgy decisions themselves.

Bolton and their fine human being of a manager Owen Coyle, will be hoping that the pendulum of Karma soon swings back their way, next season, with a quick return to the top flight…

Astrology Ancient Style

Recently, Archaeologists have discovered a 9th Century Mayan house with astronomical or astrology tables inscribed on the walls. The tables suggest that the Mesoamerican civilisation had advanced astronomy for over 1000 years, and that the information was widely available in Mayan society.

The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization, who had the only known fully-developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as for its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems.  The Mayan had a kind of golden age known to modern archaeologists as The Classic period (c. AD 250–900) during these Centuries there were millions of Maya and they moved into towns and cities, which became independent city states with grand formal buildings such as; Tikal, Palenque, Copán and Calakmul, and it was during this time that the tables were made.

The new discovery tells us much more about the Mayans than we previously knew. Whilst it was known that the Mayans had a fine knowledge of astronomy and actively used Astrology there was no evidence that this went back any further than the 11^th or 12^th century, not least because Mayan books were made of  plaster the new inscription shows the Maya were astronomically aware centuries before then.

In 2010 William Saturno of Boston University in Massachusetts was excavating ruins at Xultún when he noticed the looted remains of house with a mural on one wall, Saturno decided to excavate the building further.

The walls of the house were covered with pictures of Mayans but in the gaps between the images were examples of Mayan writing. The first  grouping of  the glyphs described the Lunar cycle, this was important to Mayan Astrology as they believed their were six gods each of whom ruled part of the cycle. If they knew which God had power over the Moon at any time they could plan their actions accordingly. Time was very important to The Maya who believed it was cyclic.

“The Maya conceived of time as a series of cycles that all interplay and all repeat,” Saturno said…

By understanding these patterns, including astronomical cycles, they decided the most auspicious dates for events. The second set of glyphs has the archaeologists scratching their heads, Saturno argues it could relate the fact the Mayans had two calendars one was a ritual calendar of 260 days the other was solar and had 365 days every 18,980 days the calendars would share the same date. All the numbers in the second set are multiples of 18,980, suggesting they are anniversaries. They are also multiples of other astronomical cycles but Saturno doesn’t know what they represent.

As to who lived in the house and would have used the strange inscriptions the answer is curious, although the house belonged to someone important they were not a member of the royal family which means that astronomical and astrology information was far more widely available in Mayan society than one might expect. Whilst the Mayan civilisation is no longer existent the descendants of the Maya can still be found in the area and it is possible that descendant of the person who made or used the glyphs is strolling around Guatemala today.

Now of course the Mayans also predicted, so it is said, the end of the world in 2012  but this new information suggests that this is NOT SO, and the world will keep going for another 7,000 years.

December 21st, the year 2012

New UFO

Not so long ago we had the “Death Star” now a new “UFO” has been spotted sunbathing.  On April 24, a camera on NASA’s Solar and Heliospheric Observatory seems to have captured the image of something very large which appears to be artificially constructed hovering perilously close to the sun.

The NASA video seems to show an object that looks like a huge sectioned metallic object with some sort of lengthy mechanical arm attached to the lower part. The YouTube video drawing attention to the object has quickly made its way to discussion forums and the tabloid press, and many seasoned UFO believers are calling it a definite “spot.”

So, is our little corner of the universe really being visited by spacecraft that have the power to draw energy from stars and withstand temperatures of around 9,900 Fahrenheit or is there a less dramatic explanation for these strange images?

During an interview with  Life’s Little Mysteries Nathan Rich, a scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory, or NRL (the group that analyzes data from Lasco 2, the telescopic camera that snapped the picture) explained that the “UFO” could be no more than a camera effect, he thinks the object is just a collection of streaks left by cosmic rays that hit the camera’s CCD sensor.

“The streaks in question are consistent with energetic particle (proton) impacts on the CCD, something which is apparent in just about every image…these artefacts do not persist from image to image,” he added.

This would suggest the cosmic streaks are unlikely to be an extraterrestrial craft. A cosmic ray burst on the camera may also account for the “boom arm” that seems to be attached the “UFO”.

Now for the science bit, so I hope you are concentrating! As a cosmic ray passes through a camera’s sensor, it deposits a large amount of its electric charge in the pixels that it penetrates. If the particle passes through at a shallow angle to the plane of the camera, it affects several pixels along its path. The result is a bright streak on the image.

In the latest sun “UFO” pictures a burst of cosmic rays happen to hit the camera lens at just the right angles to create the form of a hinged spaceship. The “boom arm,” angled at a slant across the rows and columns of pixels, was formed by a cosmic ray streaking through the camera sensor diagonally and at a shallow angle, depositing charge in several pixels along a diagonal line.

So why don’t your holiday snaps show ‘boom arms’ protruding from Aunty Marge’s head? Cameras on Earth are less susceptible to interference by charged particles from space, because the Earth’s protective magnetosphere blocks them from hitting the planet’s surface but images that are taken outside our magnetosphere, such as those taken by orbiting telescopes are prone to such cosmic ray hits.

So, looks like we might not be putting the kettle on for alien visitors just yet, but one photographic mystery remains – why do everyone’s snaps always show at least one person with a tree growing out of their head?

Lady Gaga and Mercury Retrograde

The 26 year old singer is concerned that that her world tour could be adversely effected by astrological influences as Mercury will be retrograde when she is on the road.

A source said: “Gaga is worried as she wants the stars to be aligned when she hits the road. She follows her horoscopes closely and has been looking ahead for when she’s away.”

So what is the problem? About three times a year the planet Mercury appears to be moving backwards when viewed from the Earth (in fact it doesn’t, it is an illusion). This will happen again from July 15th to August 8th — in the middle of Gaga’s huge Born This Way Ball world tour, which started last month in Seoul.

The hitch is that when Mercury goes retrograde it does bring with it certain problems which could make touring traumatic for any singer. Since Mercury governs all transportation and communication issues organising something as  complex as a rock tour can be a bit of a headache and this is likely to be the time when passports disappear, weather adversely effects travel and schedules get mislaid.

The shrewd Lady Gaga knows this is the moment when the best laid plans of mice and women can get bogged down in a quagmire of  delays, misunderstandings and confusion.

To add to the fun when Mercury is retrograde machinery and things with moving parts – such as tour buses, recording equipment and electrical instruments will reveal any weak links – usually at them least convenient moment, so no doubt the singer will ensure that any amps, lighting rigs and mics are carefully checked and double checked.

It is also likely that she may incur unexpected expenses as she travels the globe. Not that she’ll be alone, many of us will face similar problems as this time albeit on a smaller scale. So what can we do to avoid the problems associated with Mercury’s wayward behaviour? Not much, except double check appointments and allow extra time when travelling. We can’t be too shocked that when Lady Gaga found out Mercury is likely to go retrograde, “she wasn’t happy and has been talking it through with her spiritual team.”

Not least because as a source said: “She’s feeling the pressure of wanting to deliver something amazing again.”

Still, as yet, the planet has not retrograde and so far her plans seems to be on course, as Gaga’s two UK dates — at Twickenham in London on September 8th and Manchester Arena on September 11th — sold out in a minute on Ticketmaster. On the ticket site Get Me In £80 tickets were selling for £1,100.

Nevertheless,  Lady Gaga needn’t get too gloomy as when the Mercury normalizes we will all see the tempo of events pick up in our lives as the planet seems to become “stationary” and then speeds forward again.

From the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and space shuttle programs, astronauts saw unusual lights and objects, some of which have never been convincingly explained away and remain a mystery to this day. The question is, are these images of known objects that for some reason looked different in the new environment of space,  naturally occurring phenomena which no one has seen before, or signs that we are not alone in the universe?

An early example of these strange incidents occurred in June 1965 when astronaut Ed White performed the 1^st space-walk by an American as part of the Gemini IV mission. At one point during the flight, the pilot Jim McDivitt spotted something strange in space. Back in 1975, Jim commented;

“At the time that I saw it, I said there was something out in front of me or outside the spacecraft that I couldn’t identify, and I never have been able to identify it, and I don’t think anybody ever will…We were in drifting flight and my partner, Ed White, was asleep. I couldn’t see anything out in front of me except just the black sky. And as it was rotating around, I noticed something out in front that was a white cylindrical shape with a white pole sticking out of one corner of it — it [looked like] a beer can with a smooth pencil sticking out.”

It is impossible to judge distance in space unless you already know the size of the thing you are looking at so Jim had no way to tell how close the object was or its size, but he did have the presence of mind to try and photograph the object;

“I grabbed two cameras and took pictures of it.” He commented. Unfortunately, he was not able to see how the object moved or what it did next as the sun shone through the window obscuring his view.

“As the sun shone on the window, I could no longer see out and the thing just disappeared. They checked NORAD records to see what they had up on radar and there wasn’t anything within very close range of us.”

After McDivitt and White landed in the Atlantic Ocean, the films were flown back to Houston, but the quality was poor. Famous astronaut Story Musgrave, is not convinced Jim McDivitt saw an alien craft;

“I’ve seen what other astronauts think is evidence, and for me, it’s not evidence. And I found no conspiracy in terms of covering up information about extraterrestrial visits. But I feel that [aliens are] everywhere out there and they’re doing interstellar travel.”

Nevertheless Story does think that there is intelligent life in the universe even if it hasn’t dropped by to visit us yet. So could Jim have seen another spacecraft that came from another planet? Who can say, but a number of scientists believe there could be intelligent life on other worlds. Seth Shostak from SETI thinks we are not alone;

“We’re beginning to find planets that are sort of like Earth. All signs and arrows are pointing in the same direction — namely, that there probably is life out there.”

Such life, if it exists, may not be that far from our home, our own galaxy may have millions of planets that are capable of supporting life, although whether they do so is or not another matter. Seth explained the likelihood of life existing outside Earth in the following way;

“The number of planets in the part of the universe we can see is roughly comparable to the number of grains of sand on all the beaches of Earth…The bottom line is very simple: With such enormous amount of cosmic real estate, it seems so improbable that we could be alone.”

St George’s Day

It’s believed that Saint George was adopted in England because this story was similar to an Anglo-Saxon legend. George’s reputation grew when returning Crusaders claimed he miraculously appeared to lead them into battle. This is recorded over the door of a church at Fordington in Dorset, United Kingdom.

This church still exists and is the earliest church in England to be dedicated to Saint George. Saint George was soon incorporated into miracle plays and is a prime figure in Spenser’s famous epic poem “The Fairie Queen”.

St George’s Day was a major feast and national holiday in England on a par with Christmas – from the early 15th century; however, this tradition waned by the end of the 18th century, after the union of England and Scotland.

In Lithuania, Saint George is associated with weather lore; he is said to hold the keys to summer, make the grass grow and disperse the clouds – umm…something he seems disinclined to do in England!
