What is astrology?
I held an astrology gathering this week and one of the interesting things that came up was how many people there thought astrology WAS about prediction. This came as quite a surprise, because having been a professional astrologer for sixteen years, I thought this was something most people knew was not so.
Fortune Telling
Now for those of us involved in astrology for a living, we are very clear, astrology is a tool for greater personal understanding. It’s not about fortune telling, it’s not about saying that bad stuff or good stuff will happen to people, because it goes completely against the ethos of what giving responsible insights is about.
Natal astrology
So what is it? Well astrologers are here to guide people, not to tell them who they should be. What a knowledge of natal astrology does, is help the client to know more about how key planetary positions, angles and various other influences, can affect them. However, these influences don’t own or control us, because we can still make our own decisions.
Astrological Calculation
The first thing I do when a client wants my assistance is to raise or erect, their natal birth chart. Three pieces of information are crucial for this, the time, the date, and the place. Remember the Earth is spinning on it’s axis every second of every day, so this is an ever changing picture – even if some planets or positions are slower moving.
Moon conjunct Venus
The greater knowledge this insight gives us, can also help us to make more informed choices. So for example, if someone comes to see me who has Moon conjunct Venus, in say Taurus and it is in their 4th House, which itself governs the home, emotions and environment, this would tell me that this person would have a great need for comfort, tranquillity, and close family ties. It might also say that they liked an aesthetic lifestyle, or quite a luxurious one – depending on other factors.
Saturn opposite Moon and Venus
But let’s say as I look further into their situation that they have Saturn opposite Moon conjunct Venus? This would bring an altogether different slant to proceedings. Let’s say the opposition is by House too, with Saturn high in their 10th House. This suggests that they could encounter anything but perfect family relationships, or seem to meet one person after the other, that didn’t appear to understand their emotional needs, their taste and so on. This may even have been reflected in their choice of partners.
Weighting astrological influences
Now, weighting the different astrological influences in someone’s chart, takes great skill and experience. No self-respecting astrologer will ever feel that they have stopped learning in this regard. But essentially, explaining to the client just how many different factors are at play, and how some complement one another, and how others clash, is crucial.
Taking responsibility
Once the factors are all laid out, I can tell someone when more difficult aspects are due to arrive, or when ones of great opportunity are timed. I can also help them to understand past events more clearly. But essentially it is for them to relate to the process in the way they wish, not in the way I wish.
Fortune Telling
Now to call astrology Fortune Telling is quite a dated way of expressing this whole area, but there are some very gifted psychic people who can have incredible insights, and they should be respected. But astrology is not prediction, but an explanation of how background energies CAN affect us. How they affect us, is really down to our own decision making.
