The centaur is a creature with the upper half of a human but the lower body of a horse. There are a number of legends concerning the origins of the centaur, one states that Ixion of Thessaly, was tricked into mating with a cloud; the cloud gave birth to Centaurus, who mated with the mares of Pelion and produced centaurs.
In ancient Greek myth, the centaurs were a rowdy lot who were more than likely to cause trouble if they got their hands on alcohol. On the other hand, individual centaurs could be very civilised and wise. The greatest of the centaurs was Chiron, who taught the heroes Jason and Achilles the arts of war and healing. Nonetheless, Chiron had a gentler side and he was a gifted healer. It was this aspect of his character that came to the fore when he taught the great Greek physician Aesclepius the use of medicinal drugs, surgery and incantations.
